How to Check Tire Pressure and Reset a TPMS Light
Correct tire pressure supports safe handling, braking, tire life, ride quality, and fuel efficiency. When the tire-pressure monitoring system warns you, check the tires first—the light should never be cleared without correcting the cause.
Do not drive on a tire that is visibly flat, severely underinflated, bulging, cut, separating, or showing exposed cords.
Move away from traffic only when it can be done safely and arrange roadside assistance. Adding air cannot make a structurally damaged tire safe, and driving even a short distance on a flat tire can destroy it or damage the wheel.

Where to find the correct tire pressure
The recommended cold pressure is normally printed on the tire-information placard in the driver-door opening and listed in the owner's manual. Front and rear specifications may differ.
Door placard versus tire sidewall
Use: The driver-door tire placard This pressure was selected for the vehicle's weight, handling, braking, load capacity, and original tire configuration. Check for separate front, rear, spare, or loaded-vehicle values.
Do not use: The sidewall maximum The molded sidewall number is generally a maximum tire rating associated with a stated load—not the vehicle manufacturer's everyday inflation recommendation.
Measure every tire with an accurate gauge. A tire can be dangerously low before it looks visibly flat.

How to check and adjust tire pressure
Pressure changes with temperature and driving. For the most useful comparison with the placard, check the tires cold under the conditions specified in the owner's manual.
Find the vehicle's recommended pressure
Open the driver door and locate the tire-and-loading- information placard. Record the cold PSI or kPa for the front and rear tires, which may be different. Check the owner's manual for alternate loads, towing conditions, non-original tires, and the spare.
Do not inflate to the maximum pressure molded into the tire sidewall unless the vehicle manufacturer specifically requires that value.
Check the tires when cold
Park on a firm, level surface, shift into Park, apply the parking brake, and turn the vehicle off. Check before driving or after the cooling period defined by the manufacturer. Sunlight on one side of the vehicle can also warm tires and change readings.
If you must measure a warm tire, do not bleed it down to the cold specification. Recheck and make final adjustments after the tires cool.
Inspect the tires and valve stems
Before adding air, look for a puncture, embedded object, cut, bulge, cracking, exposed cord, uneven wear, damaged wheel, or bent and leaking valve stem. Listen for escaping air. Do not remove an embedded nail or screw at the roadside because it may be slowing the leak.
Measure each tire
Remove the valve cap and place it somewhere clean. Press the gauge squarely and firmly onto the valve stem until the hissing stops, then read the pressure. Repeat if the seal was poor. Record the reading for every tire rather than assuming they are equal.
Add or release air gradually
Connect a properly rated inflator and add air in short bursts. Remove the inflator and check again with the gauge. If the pressure is too high while the tire is cold, release a small amount through the valve and remeasure. Stop when the cold pressure matches the placard.
Portable compressors can become hot during use. Follow their duty-cycle, power-source, and safety instructions.
Recheck and reinstall the caps
Take a final reading at every wheel, including the spare when applicable. Reinstall each valve cap snugly by hand. Caps help protect the valve core from dirt and moisture. Never use sealant or a valve-core tool unless the product and vehicle instructions specifically call for it.
Allow the TPMS to update
Start the vehicle and review the tire-pressure display if equipped. Some systems update immediately; others need time or driving at a specified speed. Drive only when all tires appear safe and follow the exact update instructions in the owner's manual.
The light may return when a slow leak, damaged tire, temperature drop, or TPMS fault remains.
Get service when the warning remains
Schedule inspection if a tire loses pressure again, readings differ significantly from the display, the light remains on after the manufacturer's update process, or the light flashes before staying illuminated. The vehicle may have a puncture, leaking valve, damaged wheel, failed sensor, weak sensor battery, or system communication problem.
A TPMS warning tells you to check pressure; it does not identify every damaged tire or replace routine gauge checks.

How often should I check tire pressure?
Follow the owner's manual. A practical routine is at least monthly, before long trips, before towing or carrying a heavy load, and whenever temperatures change significantly or the TPMS light appears. TPMS is a warning system, not a replacement for regular checks.
What does “cold tire pressure” mean?
It generally means pressure measured before the vehicle has been driven enough to heat the tires, but the exact conditions should come from the owner's manual. Driving, direct sunlight, and warm pavement can all raise the reading.
Why did my TPMS light come on after a cold night?
Tire pressure falls as temperature drops. Tires that were already near the warning threshold may trigger the light overnight. Adjust them cold to the door-placard pressure rather than waiting for warmer weather to hide the warning.
Should all four tires use the same PSI?
Not always. Some vehicles specify different front and rear pressures, and pressure may change for heavy loads or towing. Read the placard and owner's manual instead of copying one tire's value to every position.
Why does the dashboard pressure differ from my gauge?
