Your brakes are the vehicle's most important safety system. You can watch for warning signs and perform a limited visual check, but accurate pad, rotor, caliper, hose, and hydraulic testing requires proper equipment and a trained technician.
Move out of traffic only if it can be done safely, use the parking brake only as the owner's manual directs, switch on the hazard lights, and arrange roadside assistance or towing. Never conduct a test drive when brake failure is suspected.
Pay attention to changes
A single symptom does not identify the failed part, but any meaningful change in braking deserves prompt attention.

The pedal feels soft, spongy, unusually hard, lower than normal, slow to return, or begins sinking under steady pressure.
Squealing, scraping, grinding, clicking, clunking, or repeated rubbing appears during braking or wheel rotation.
The pedal, steering wheel, seat, or vehicle shakes or pulses during ordinary braking when ABS should not be activating.

Brake components can remain extremely hot after driving. Allow them to cool fully before looking near the wheels.
Non-invasive safety check
This guide helps you identify reasons to seek service. It does not replace measuring pad thickness, rotor thickness and runout, hydraulic pressure, caliper movement, parking-brake operation, or diagnostic trouble codes.
Find the meaning of every brake-related indicator, the brake-fluid reservoir location, required fluid specification, recommended inspection schedule, towing instructions, and any hybrid or electric-vehicle precautions.
Use a firm, level surface away from traffic. Shift into Park, apply the parking brake, turn the vehicle off, keep the key or phone away from vehicles that can start automatically, and chock a wheel when appropriate. Wait until the wheels and brakes are cool.
Never crawl beneath a vehicle supported only by a jack. This customer check does not require lifting the vehicle or removing a wheel.
Start or power on the vehicle normally and confirm that the brake, ABS, stability-control, and parking-brake lights behave as described in the owner's manual. Some lights illuminate briefly during a self-test; a light that stays on, flashes, or appears while driving may indicate a fault.
A red brake warning can also indicate an applied parking brake or low brake fluid, but never assume the cause without checking the manual and having the system inspected.
With the vehicle secured and the engine or drive system in the condition specified by the owner's manual, press the brake pedal normally. Compare its travel and firmness with what you are accustomed to. It should not suddenly sink, feel unusually soft or hard, remain down, or require pumping.
Do not repeatedly pump the pedal on a hybrid, EV, or electronically controlled brake system unless the manufacturer instructs you to do so.
Turn the vehicle off and locate the reservoir using the owner's manual. From outside the closed reservoir, compare the fluid level with the MIN and MAX marks. Keep dirt, water, petroleum products, and incorrect fluids away from the system.
A low level may reflect pad wear or a leak. Do not simply top it off and ignore the cause. Never use power-steering fluid, transmission fluid, engine oil, or an unapproved brake-fluid type.
Without reaching through the wheel, use a flashlight to look for obvious concerns: a pad that appears extremely thin, deep rotor grooves, severe rust scaling, a cracked rotor, damaged hose, loose component, or fresh wet fluid. Visibility varies, and many inner pads cannot be seen.
A visual glance cannot prove the brakes are safe. Inner and outer pads may wear differently, and measurements must be compared with manufacturer specifications.
Recall any recent grinding, scraping, squealing, pulsing, pulling, longer stopping distance, burning odor, smoke, or change in pedal feel. Do not create a problem by performing hard stops or high-speed tests. If normal braking feels different, schedule an inspection.
If everything appears normal, continue following the manufacturer's maintenance schedule. If you notice any concern—or simply cannot confirm the condition—schedule a professional brake inspection. If braking is reduced, fluid is leaking, the pedal sinks, grinding is severe, smoke is present, or a red warning remains on, do not drive; arrange towing.

Pad thickness can be difficult to judge through a wheel, and the hidden inner pad may wear faster. A technician should measure both sides at every wheel.
Hydraulic system care
Brake fluid transfers pedal force through the hydraulic system. It is hygroscopic, meaning it absorbs moisture, and the wrong fluid or contamination can damage components and reduce braking performance.

Read the reservoir from the outside whenever possible. Opening it unnecessarily can introduce moisture or contamination.
Do not take chances
Brake symptoms can worsen without warning. If you are uncertain whether the vehicle can stop safely, keep it parked and obtain professional help.

A complete inspection may include pad and rotor measurements, caliper and hose checks, parking-brake testing, fluid condition testing, scan-tool diagnostics, and a controlled verification drive.

Follow the maintenance schedule and inspection guidance in your owner's manual. Brake wear varies with vehicle design, load, terrain, towing, traffic, driving habits, corrosion, and regenerative braking. Have them checked promptly whenever a symptom or warning appears.
Sometimes part of an outer pad is visible, but that view is incomplete. The inner pad may wear differently, and hardware can hide the friction material. A technician should inspect and measure the pads at every wheel against manufacturer specifications.
No. Squeaking can come from wear indicators, moisture, surface rust, debris, glazing, pad composition, hardware, or other causes. Because sound alone cannot determine remaining thickness or safety, new or persistent noise should be inspected.
Rapid pulsing during an emergency stop may be normal ABS operation. Pulsing during ordinary braking can relate to rotor variation, wheel or suspension issues, corrosion, or other conditions. A technician should diagnose when and why it occurs.
Not without identifying the cause. The level can fall as pads wear, but a leak is also possible. Adding fluid may hide a safety problem or cause overflow when new pads are installed. Use only the specified fluid and follow professional or manufacturer guidance.
Hybrids and EVs blend regenerative braking with friction brakes. Pedal feel, brake usage, corrosion patterns, service modes, and procedures can differ. High-voltage and electronically controlled systems require vehicle-specific precautions and trained service.
Light surface rust can form after rain, washing, or sitting and may clear during normal braking. Heavy scaling, deep pitting, persistent grinding, vibration, or rust that does not clear should be professionally inspected.
