How to Check Your Engine Oil
Engine oil protects critical moving parts from friction, heat, and wear. A quick level check can help you catch low oil before it becomes an expensive problem—but the exact method and timing depend on your vehicle.

How to check engine oil with a dipstick
This is a general procedure. If your vehicle uses an electronic measurement or the owner's manual gives different instructions, follow the vehicle-specific method.
Read the owner's manual
Confirm whether your vehicle uses a traditional dipstick or an electronic oil-level system. Find the required engine temperature, waiting time, dipstick location, correct oil specification, and approximate quantity between the minimum and maximum marks.
Park safely on level ground
Park on a flat, stable surface, shift into Park, apply the parking brake, and turn off the engine. Wait exactly as directed by the owner's manual so oil can drain back into the oil pan. A slope or incorrect waiting time can produce a misleading reading.
Open and secure the hood
Release the hood, lift it, and make sure it is fully supported by its struts or prop rod. Locate the dipstick using the owner's manual. Its handle is often brightly colored, but color and location vary.
Do not touch hot exhaust components, reach near a moving fan, or allow loose clothing and tools near belts or pulleys.
Remove and wipe the dipstick
Pull the dipstick completely out while keeping debris away from the tube. Wipe the entire measuring end clean with a lint-free cloth or sturdy paper towel. Identify the minimum and maximum marks before reinserting it.
Reinsert it completely
Slide the dipstick all the way back into its tube until fully seated. Pause briefly, then pull it straight out again. Hold it level or with the measuring tip slightly downward so oil does not run along the stick and distort the reading.
Read both sides of the dipstick
Look for the clear edge of the oil film relative to the minimum and maximum marks. Check both sides; use the cleaner, more consistent reading. If the oil is smeared or difficult to read, wipe the dipstick and repeat the process.
Oil normally darkens in service, so color alone does not determine whether an oil change is due. Milky, foamy, gritty, metallic-looking, fuel-smelling, or unusually thick oil should be evaluated professionally.
Add the correct oil only if needed
If the level is below the acceptable range, locate the engine-oil fill cap—never pour oil into the dipstick tube unless the manufacturer specifically instructs it. Confirm the exact oil viscosity and specification, remove the cap, insert a clean funnel, and add a small amount.
Wait for the oil to drain into the pan, then repeat the dipstick check. Continue gradually until the level is within the range. Do not fill above the maximum mark.
Reinstall everything and inspect
