How to Jump-Start a Car Battery Safely
A dead 12-volt battery can leave you stranded, but careful preparation and the correct cable order may get you moving again. Always check your owner's manual first—connection points and procedures vary by vehicle.
Do not attempt a jump-start if the battery is cracked, leaking, swollen, visibly damaged, or may be frozen.
Keep sparks, flames, cigarettes, jewelry, loose clothing, and metal tools away from the battery. Wear eye protection and gloves. If you are unsure about the battery, connection points, voltage, or vehicle procedure, contact roadside assistance or a qualified technician.
Prepare before connecting anything
What you need—and what may already be in your vehicle
Most vehicles do not include jumper cables or a portable jump starter as standard equipment. Carrying your own quality equipment can keep you from relying on another driver, but it must be rated and used according to its instructions.

Before every use: Inspect the cables or jump pack for damaged insulation, loose clamps, swelling, corrosion, or other defects.
Identify the correct positive terminal and approved ground point before attaching any clamp. Never guess based only on location.
The key sequence
Jumper cable connection order
This is the common sequence for compatible 12-volt vehicles. Follow the owner's manuals if either vehicle specifies a different procedure.
Connect in this order

Red to disabled + Positive jump point on the vehicle that will not start

Red to donor + Positive terminal or jump point on the assisting vehicle
3
Black to donor − Negative terminal or specified point on the assisting vehicle

Black to ground Approved ground point on the disabled vehicle, away from its battery
Disconnect in the exact reverse order: disabled-vehicle ground, donor negative, donor positive, then disabled-vehicle positive.
Keep the clamps separated and make sure every connection is secure. Once a cable is connected to a battery, never allow its opposite clamp to touch metal or another clamp.
Step-by-step
How to jump-start a 12-volt vehicle battery
Your owner's manual is the final authority. Do not proceed until you have confirmed the correct voltage, terminals, grounding point, and procedure for both vehicles.
Confirm that jump-starting is allowed
Read both owner's manuals. Verify that both vehicles have compatible 12-volt systems and that neither manufacturer prohibits this type of jump-start. Locate the designated positive and negative or ground connection points.
Never connect jumper cables to an EV or hybrid high-voltage battery, orange high-voltage cable, or high-voltage component.
Inspect the battery and equipment
Do not continue if a battery is cracked, leaking, bulging, badly corroded, unusually hot, or possibly frozen. Make sure the jumper cables are undamaged and the clamps are clean and separated. Remove metal jewelry and put on safety glasses and gloves.
Position and shut down both vehicles
Park the donor vehicle close enough for the cables to reach without stretching, but do not allow the vehicles to touch. Shift both vehicles into Park—or Neutral as directed for a manual transmission—apply both parking brakes, and turn both vehicles completely off. Switch off lights, climate controls, audio systems, and other accessories.
Connect red to the disabled vehicle
Attach one red positive (+) clamp to the designated positive terminal or remote positive jump point on the vehicle that will not start. Make sure the clamp grips clean metal securely.
Connect red to the donor vehicle
Attach the other red positive (+) clamp to the donor vehicle's designated positive terminal or positive jump point.
Connect black to the donor vehicle
Attach one black negative (−) clamp to the donor vehicle's negative terminal or to the point specified in its owner's manual.
Connect the final black clamp to ground
Attach the remaining black negative (−) clamp to the manufacturer-designated grounding point on the disabled vehicle. This is typically an unpainted, solid metal engine or chassis point away from the battery, fuel lines, belts, fans, and moving parts.
Do not attach the final clamp to the disabled battery's negative post unless the owner's manual specifically directs you to do so.
Start the donor, then try the disabled vehicle
Confirm that the cables are clear of fans, belts, and other moving parts. Start the donor vehicle and allow it to run as directed by the owner's manual, commonly for a few minutes. Then try to start the disabled vehicle.
Do not crank continuously. If it does not start after a few brief attempts, stop. Continued attempts can overheat the starter, cables, or battery and may indicate a problem beyond a discharged battery.
Disconnect the cables in reverse order
Once the disabled vehicle is running steadily—and while keeping the clamps from touching—remove the cables in this order:
Black clamp from the disabled vehicle's ground point
Black clamp from the donor vehicle
Red clamp from the donor vehicle
Red clamp from the previously disabled vehicle
Replace any terminal covers and secure the cables before closing the hood.
After the engine starts
A jump-start does not fix the underlying problem
A discharged battery may be caused by age, an electrical drain, a charging-system fault, loose or corroded connections, extreme temperatures, or simply leaving an accessory on.
What to do next
Keep the vehicle running and drive only as directed by the owner's manual.
Do not assume a short idle will fully recharge a deeply discharged battery.
Arrange a battery and charging-system test as soon as practical.
Watch for battery, charging-system, or electrical warning messages.
Drive cautiously to a safe location or service facility.
Stop and get assistance if
The vehicle stalls again or will not stay running.
The battery or charging-system warning remains illuminated.
You smell sulfur or burning, see smoke, or hear unusual electrical sounds.
The cables become hot, spark excessively, or begin to melt.

Jump-start FAQs
Can every vehicle be jump-started the same way?
No. Battery locations, remote terminals, grounding points, operating modes, and procedures vary. Some vehicles have special restrictions. Always follow the owner's manuals for both vehicles.
Can I jump-start a hybrid or electric vehicle?
Some hybrids and EVs have a conventional 12-volt system that may be jump-started using specific procedures and designated points. Others have limitations, including restrictions on using the vehicle to jump another car. Never access or connect to the high-voltage system. Follow the vehicle's manual exactly or call roadside assistance.
Why is the final black clamp connected away from the battery?
The final connection may create a spark. Using the designated ground point away from the discharged battery helps keep that spark away from gases that a battery may release. Use only the grounding point specified by the manufacturer.
What if the vehicle still will not start?
Stop after a few brief attempts. Recheck the manual and connections only after turning everything off and making the system safe. The battery may be too damaged or the vehicle may have a starter, charging, fuel, security, or other problem that requires professional diagnosis.
Is a portable jump starter safer than using another vehicle?
A properly rated jump starter can be convenient and removes the need for a donor vehicle, but incorrect use can still cause injury or vehicle damage. Keep the unit charged, inspect it regularly, and follow both the jump-starter and vehicle instructions exactly.
Does driving recharge the battery completely?
Not necessarily. A deeply discharged, aging, or damaged battery may not recover through normal driving, and a charging-system problem may prevent charging altogether. Have the battery and charging system tested.
