How Much Horsepower Does a Mustang Dark Horse Have?
The 2026 Ford Mustang Dark Horse produces 500 horsepower and 418 lb-ft of torque from a naturally aspirated, modified Gen-4 5.0L Coyote V8. That works out to 100 horsepower per liter without a turbocharger or supercharger.
Quick Answer: 500 Horsepower
The 2026 Mustang Dark Horse and Dark Horse Premium are rated at 500 horsepower at 7,250 rpm and 418 lb-ft of torque at 4,900 rpm on 93-octane fuel. The separate Dark Horse SC model uses a supercharged 5.2L V8 and is rated much higher, so shoppers should not confuse the two models.

The Engine
What Engine Makes 500 Horsepower?
The Mustang Dark Horse uses a naturally aspirated, modified Gen-4 5.0L Coyote V8. Ford rates it at 500 horsepower at 7,250 rpm and 418 lb-ft of torque at 4,900 rpm when using 93-octane fuel.
Unlike a forced-induction engine, the regular Dark Horse reaches 500 horsepower without a turbocharger or supercharger. That gives the engine the high-revving, naturally aspirated character many Mustang enthusiasts specifically want.
The Dark Horse engine is paired with performance hardware throughout the car, including additional cooling, MagneRide damping and Brembo braking equipment.

More Than Horsepower
Why the Dark Horse Is More Than a 500-HP GT
The Dark Horse is not simply a Mustang GT with additional engine output. Ford combines the 500-horsepower V8 with standard MagneRide damping, Brembo brakes and additional powertrain cooling.
Engine oil, transmission and differential coolers help the car manage heat during more demanding use. The chassis and suspension tuning are also aimed at drivers who intend to use more of the Mustang's capability on a road course or during aggressive driving.
That means the Dark Horse's appeal comes from the complete performance package rather than the extra horsepower alone.
Premium Fuel
Does the Dark Horse Need 93 Octane to Make 500 HP?
Ford's published 500-horsepower and 418-lb-ft ratings are based on 93-octane fuel. That is important when comparing advertised power figures because the maximum rating is tied to premium fuel.
Owners should follow the fuel recommendations in the owner's manual for their specific vehicle and operating conditions.
GT vs Dark Horse
How Much More Horsepower Does the Dark Horse Have Than the GT?
The difference depends on how the Mustang GT is equipped.
| 2026 Mustang Model | Horsepower | Torque | Difference vs Dark Horse |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mustang GT | 480 hp | 415 lb-ft | Dark Horse has 20 more hp |
| Mustang GT with Active Valve Performance Exhaust | 486 hp | 418 lb-ft | Dark Horse has 14 more hp |
| Mustang Dark Horse | 500 hp | 418 lb-ft | Baseline |
Dark Horse vs Dark Horse SC
Is Every Dark Horse a 500-HP Mustang?
No. The regular 2026 Mustang Dark Horse and Dark Horse Premium use the naturally aspirated 5.0L Coyote V8 and are rated at 500 horsepower.
The separate 2026 Mustang Dark Horse SC uses a supercharged 5.2L cross-plane-crank V8 and is rated at 795 maximum horsepower and 660 lb-ft of torque.
Because both models use the Dark Horse name, shoppers searching only for "Dark Horse horsepower" may see both numbers. For the standard Dark Horse discussed on this page, the correct figure is 500 horsepower.
What 500 HP Means
Why the Dark Horse Powertrain Stands Out
Naturally Aspirated
The regular Dark Horse reaches 500 horsepower without a turbocharger or supercharger.
100 Horsepower per Liter
The modified 5.0L V8 produces 100 horsepower for every liter of displacement.
High-RPM Output
Peak horsepower arrives at 7,250 rpm, emphasizing the Coyote V8's high-revving nature.
418 LB-FT of Torque
Peak torque arrives at 4,900 rpm, giving the engine strong midrange and upper-rpm performance.
Manual or Automatic
Dark Horse buyers can choose an available TREMEC 6-speed manual or a 10-speed automatic.
Track-Capable Hardware
The powertrain is supported by additional cooling, MagneRide damping and Brembo braking hardware.
Bottom Line
How Much Horsepower Does the 2026 Mustang Dark Horse Have?
The 2026 Ford Mustang Dark Horse produces 500 horsepower at 7,250 rpm and 418 lb-ft of torque at 4,900 rpm from its modified, naturally aspirated Gen-4 5.0L Coyote V8.
Those ratings are based on 93-octane fuel. The standard Dark Horse therefore produces 20 more horsepower than a standard Mustang GT and 14 more horsepower than a GT equipped with the available Active Valve Performance Exhaust.
If you see a 795-horsepower figure associated with the Dark Horse name, that refers to the separate Dark Horse SC model, not the standard Dark Horse.
