Find the Right Guide

Ford Towing Information by Model Year

Towing capability can change significantly from one model year, configuration, engine, axle ratio, drivetrain and equipment package to another. That makes the correct model-year towing guide an important starting point whether you're researching a Ford you already own or shopping for your next tow vehicle.

Research a Ford You Own

Looking for towing information on an older F-150, Super Duty, Expedition, Explorer, Ranger, Transit or another Ford vehicle? Start with the guide that corresponds with your vehicle's model year.

Compare Tow-Vehicle Configurations

Ford towing ratings can depend on engine, axle ratio, cab, wheelbase, drivetrain, hitch equipment, tow packages, payload and other configuration details. The applicable guide helps you narrow down the correct combination.

Understand More Than Max Towing

Maximum trailer weight is only part of the equation. Payload, tongue weight, Gross Vehicle Weight Rating and Gross Combined Weight Rating can all affect whether a particular vehicle and trailer combination is appropriate.

Important Ford Towing Terms to Understand

A towing guide contains much more information than a maximum trailer weight. Understanding a few basic weight ratings can help you use the guide correctly.

GVWR — Gross Vehicle Weight Rating

The maximum allowable loaded weight of the vehicle, including passengers, cargo and other weight carried by the vehicle.

GCWR — Gross Combination Weight Rating

The maximum allowable combined weight of the loaded tow vehicle and loaded trailer for the applicable vehicle configuration.

Payload

Payload represents the allowable weight carried by the vehicle. Passengers, cargo, accessories and trailer tongue or pin weight can consume available payload.

Trailer Tongue or King Pin Weight

The portion of the trailer's loaded weight that is transferred to the tow vehicle through the hitch, fifth-wheel or gooseneck connection.

How to Use a Ford Towing Guide

The best towing research starts with the exact vehicle and the actual trailer you intend to pull.

1

Choose the Correct Model Year

Begin with the model year of the Ford vehicle you own or are considering. Specifications and available configurations can change from year to year.

2

Identify the Exact Vehicle Configuration

Determine the model, engine, drivetrain, cab, wheelbase, axle ratio and applicable towing equipment. Two vehicles wearing the same model badge can have different towing ratings.

3

Know the Loaded Trailer Weight

Research the trailer's realistic loaded weight rather than relying only on an empty or advertised dry weight. Cargo, water, equipment and supplies can increase the weight being towed.

4

Check Payload and Combined Weight Limits

Make sure passengers, cargo, hitch weight and trailer weight remain within the applicable vehicle, axle, payload and combination weight limits.

5

Verify the Exact Vehicle Before Towing

Use the towing guide together with the vehicle Owner's Manual, Safety Compliance Certification Label and other information applicable to the specific vehicle before towing.

Research Ford Trucks, SUVs, Vans & Tow Vehicles

Depending on model year, Ford RV & Trailer Towing Guides can contain information for a wide range of Ford vehicles and chassis applications.

Why Keep Older Ford Towing Guides Available?

Trucks and SUVs can remain in service for decades. Someone shopping for a used Ford, purchasing a camper or trailer, replacing a work truck or researching a vehicle they already own may need specifications that are no longer part of Ford's current-model marketing material.

Used Ford Truck Research

A previous-generation F-150 or Super Duty may still be an excellent tow vehicle, but its ratings should be researched using information appropriate to its own model year and configuration.

RV & Camper Shopping

If you're considering a travel trailer, fifth wheel, boat or camper, the tow vehicle and trailer should be evaluated together before you make a purchase.
