Maximum towing is not the rating for every vehicle. Engine, drivetrain, axle ratio, cab, wheelbase, trim, options, passengers, cargo, payload and towing equipment can all change a Ford vehicle's actual trailer rating. Use the complete 2020 Ford guide and information for the specific vehicle before towing.

Why the 2020 Ford Towing Guide Is Worth Keeping

The 2020 model year captures a very different Ford lineup from today's. It includes vehicles and powertrains that disappeared from later towing guides while predating several of Ford's newest truck and SUV nameplates.

F-150 Still Offered a Diesel

The 2020 F-150 lineup includes the 3.0L Turbo Diesel V6, giving used-truck shoppers an important year-specific towing reference.

No PowerBoost Yet

The 3.5L PowerBoost Full Hybrid did not appear until the redesigned 2021 F-150, so the 2020 engine lineup is materially different.

No F-150 Lightning Yet

Ford's electric F-150 was not part of the 2020 model-year towing guide.

Fusion Is Still Included

The guide includes conventional Fusion towing ratings, making the archive useful for owners researching one of Ford's final Fusion model years.

Bronco Had Not Returned Yet

There is no full-size Bronco towing section in the 2020 guide because the reborn Bronco joined the following model year's lineup.

EcoSport & Transit Connect

Both vehicles appear in the 2020 towing guide even though they are no longer part of Ford's current U.S. new-vehicle lineup.

2020 F-150 Towing

2020 Ford F-150 Towing Capacity by Engine

The 2020 F-150 offered six powertrain choices, including naturally aspirated gas, EcoBoost, diesel and High Output EcoBoost engines.

3.5L High Output EcoBoost V6 - Raptor8,000 lbs.1,200 lbs.

2020 F-150 maximum: Ford lists the 3.5L EcoBoost at up to 13,200 pounds of maximum available towing. Maximum towing and maximum payload are independent attributes and may not be achievable simultaneously on the same truck.

Before the 2021 Redesign

What Makes the 2020 F-150 Different?

3.5L EcoBoost

13,200 lbs.

This engine provides the highest conventional trailer rating listed in Ford's 2020 F-150 performance summary.

The naturally aspirated V8 provides significant towing and the highest maximum payload figure in Ford's engine summary.

3.0L Diesel

11,500 lbs.

The 3.0L Turbo Diesel V6 produced 440 lb.-ft. of torque and remains an important configuration for used F-150 research.

Heavy-Duty Ford Towing

2020 Ford Super Duty Towing Capacity

The 2020 Super Duty lineup provides three very different maximum towing figures depending on whether the trailer is conventional, fifth-wheel or gooseneck.

Conventional

24,200 lbs.

Fifth-Wheel

32,500 lbs.

Gooseneck

37,000 lbs.

2020 Super Duty Engines

  • 7.3L Gas V8
  • 6.7L Power Stroke V8 Turbo Diesel

The 7.3L gas V8 was a major addition to the 2020 Super Duty powertrain lineup.

6.7L Power Stroke Diesel

Ford rated the third-generation 6.7L Power Stroke at 475 horsepower and 1,050 lb.-ft. of torque for 2020.

The diesel powers the highest-capacity F-350 and F-450 configurations shown in the towing tables.

The 37,000-pound figure applies to a specific properly configured Super Duty gooseneck application. F-250, F-350 and F-450 towing capacities vary considerably with engine, cab, axle ratio, drivetrain, GVWR, rear-wheel configuration and hitch type.

Midsize Truck Capability

2020 Ford Ranger Towing Capacity

The Ranger's 2020 towing setup is refreshingly straightforward compared with today's multi-engine midsize truck lineup.

With Trailer Tow Package

Up to 7,500 lbs.

Properly equipped 2020 Ranger SuperCab and SuperCrew configurations with the 2.3L EcoBoost and Trailer Tow Package 53R can tow up to 7,500 pounds.

Without Trailer Tow Package

Up to 3,500 lbs.

Ford's Ranger towing selector lists lower-GCWR configurations at 3,500 pounds and states that trailer weight should not exceed 3,500 pounds when towing with the rear bumper only.

The 2.0L EcoBoost Fusion is listed at up to 2,000 pounds. The 1.5L EcoBoost and 2.5L four-cylinder are listed at up to 1,000 pounds.

Ford does not rate the Fusion Hybrid or Fusion Plug-in Hybrid for trailer towing.

Select configurations provide significantly greater towing capability than Passenger Van models.

Understand the Ratings

Important Ford Towing Weight Terms

The highest advertised towing number is only one piece of determining whether a vehicle and trailer are properly matched.

Base Curb Weight

Vehicle weight with standard equipment and necessary fluids but without passengers, cargo or optional equipment.

Payload

The allowable combined weight of passengers and cargo carried by the vehicle.

GVW

Gross Vehicle Weight is the actual measured weight of the loaded vehicle.

GVWR

Gross Vehicle Weight Rating is the maximum allowable loaded weight of the vehicle.

GAWR

Gross Axle Weight Rating is the maximum permissible load on an individual axle.

GCW

Gross Combination Weight is the actual weight of the loaded tow vehicle and loaded trailer combined.

GCWR

Gross Combination Weight Rating is the maximum allowable combined weight of the vehicle, trailer, passengers and cargo.

Tongue / King Pin Weight

The portion of the trailer's weight transferred to the towing vehicle through the hitch connection.

Trailer Connection Matters

Conventional, Fifth-Wheel & Gooseneck Towing

Conventional Trailer

Conventional trailers connect behind the tow vehicle using a receiver hitch and ball. Proper tongue weight and hitch capacity are critical.

Fifth-Wheel Trailer

A fifth-wheel hitch mounts in a pickup bed and transfers king pin weight directly over the truck's rear axle area.

Gooseneck Trailer

Gooseneck trailers also connect inside the pickup bed and are frequently used for heavy commercial, agricultural and equipment applications.

How to Research a 2020 Ford for Towing

1

Determine Loaded Trailer Weight

Include cargo, fluids, tools, equipment and supplies instead of relying only on the trailer's empty weight.

2

Identify the Exact Ford Configuration

Engine, drivetrain, cab, wheelbase, axle ratio and options can change maximum trailer weight.

3

Check Available Payload

Passengers, cargo, accessories and trailer tongue or king pin weight consume available payload.

4

Verify Required Tow Equipment

Higher Ford towing ratings frequently require specific factory tow packages, axle ratios or hitch equipment.

5

Check GVWR, GAWR & GCWR

The tow vehicle, individual axles and complete vehicle-and-trailer combination must remain within every applicable limit.

6

Use Ford's Complete 2020 Guide

Confirm the exact configuration in the detailed towing tables and consult the vehicle Owner's Manual before connecting a trailer.

Standardized Tow Testing

SAE J2807 & 2020 Ford Towing

Ford's towing guide references SAE J2807, which establishes procedures and performance requirements for determining Gross Combined Weight Ratings and Trailer Weight Ratings. This provides a more consistent basis for comparing similarly classified tow vehicles.
